Princess Zelda
Darren Calvert Art
No Rescue Required
This costume is based on a fan art by Darren Calvert, be sure to check out his amazing artwork!
First worn at Anime Expo 2007
Price wise this costume cost me about $115
Worked on this on and off for two months
When I first came across this fan art I knew that I would one day make the costume. Just about a year after first finding it I finally decided it was time to make it. I always wanted to cosplay from the Zelda series but I could never decide on a costume, so this one was perfect for me. It was a good mix of the femininity you would expect from Zelda but with an edge. Sadly most people missed that concept and I was called "female Link" quite a bit, but I just laughed it off.
The skirt, top and shirt for this costume was made out of linen fabric which I love. I started out by making the top first, I used an old t shirt I had and used that as a pattern. The shirt was made entirely out of pink fabric and then I did the white parts on top of the pink and sewed it on. For the sleeves I had to play around with the design to make the length work for my arms I used a hood pattern to make the hood that is worn with the shirt and that pins in place. It seems to me in the art the this is more of a dress but I decided to make the two pieces separate. The skirt was very simple and made from a basic skirt pattern, it has a small zipper that goes up the side and the skirt is lined. For the hat I made a pattern out of news paper and used the same fabric as the rest of the costume.
The apron of the belt was made out of craft foam that I covered in pink fabric. All the little design details were also made out of foamie that I glued on top of the apron. The main piece attaches to the belt which is held together by Velcro that I had glued on. The same went for the gold armor that goes on the front of the shirt, I layered foamie to give it a nice look and sprayed it gold. The red jewel in the center is actually a button that I had found and it fit perfectly. This piece attached with craft safety pins that I had attached to the back of the piece. The boots were a lucky find that I got at Sears for $5 and the vintage gloves were purchased on eBay. The elf ears which are amazing and worth the buy, were purchased from Aradani Studios.
